Weekly Odoo Notes: practical Odoo updates for Caribbean businesses
In our previous Weekly Odoo Notes we previewed Odoo 20. On September 24, 2026, Odoo unveiled it on stage at Odoo Experience 2026 in Brussels. Here is what was confirmed, what changes on your invoice, and what we recommend.
The headline features
Odoo 20 puts AI at the centre. The confirmed highlights:
- AI agents: assistants that carry out routine work, such as prioritizing helpdesk tickets, following up on orders, sending stock alerts, and analyzing documents.
- Reports on demand: ask a question in plain language ("sales by salesperson this quarter") and get a chart or dashboard, instead of building it by hand.
- MCP connection: MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets outside AI assistants connect to Odoo.
- A refreshed, faster interface: a redesigned look, quicker switching between list, calendar, map and summary-table (pivot) views, and the ability to keep working offline and sync when you reconnect.
- Chat (Discuss) improvements: polls, meetings and WhatsApp integration inside Discuss, Odoo's built-in chat app.
- Point of Sale: a floor plan editor with reservations, useful for restaurants and hospitality.
- Accounting: a built-in payment button on invoices and automatic reconciliation (the payment is matched to the invoice for you). News about Peppol, a European e-invoicing network, mainly affects Europe, not Aruba.
Some features are only in Odoo Enterprise (the paid edition), not the free Community version, and the first release will get fixes in the weeks ahead.
What changes in pricing
For most businesses, the bigger news is pricing.
- Standard plan: unchanged. If you're on Standard, your per-user price stays the same.
- Custom plan: about 20% increase. Odoo called it its first price change since 2022. In US-dollar pricing, which is how Aruba customers are usually quoted, the Custom plan already went up earlier in 2026, so ask for a current quote for your region. You need the Custom plan if you use Odoo Studio, custom-built add-ons, the external API, more than one company, Odoo.sh (Odoo's hosting for customized systems), or your own server.
- New Light User. This is a cheaper user type for staff who only need personal and floor-level tools: time off, expenses, attendance, appraisals, planning, the point of sale, barcode scanning, shop floor and field service. Light Users have no access to sales, purchasing or accounting. It is available from Odoo 20 onwards, and every database still needs at least one full (regular) user.
For a hotel, restaurant, retailer or distributor in Aruba with many floor staff, the Light User could lower costs. But read the fine print: under Odoo's updated subscription agreement, partners report that active employee records without a user login are counted as Light Users. Check your employee list before you upgrade.
What this means for your upgrade plans
Our advice from the preview still stands: don't upgrade your live system on day one.
- Let Odoo 20 settle. Wait for the first rounds of fixes.
- Check your add-ons. Any custom changes and add-ons from the Odoo App Store must be updated for version 20. That includes local setups for Aruba taxes, payroll and reporting.
- Test on a copy first. Have key users run their daily work (invoicing, stock, payroll, point of sale) on a test database.
- Avoid high season. For tourism businesses, avoid going live between December and April.
If you're on the Custom plan, your renewal is a good moment to review what you pay and whether some users could become Light Users once you're on Odoo 20.
Next steps
- On the Standard plan? No price change. Look at which new features your team would actually use.
- On the Custom plan? Check your renewal date and ask for an updated quote before it arrives.
- Many employees who only clock in, request leave or scan? Count them, including employee records without a login. They may be Light Users after you upgrade.
- On Odoo 17 or older? Now that Odoo 20 is out, Odoo 17 and older fall outside the three most recent versions that Odoo normally supports. Plan your upgrade.
